Comment: this outline account is meant to represent a replacement of a portion of Cleanthes' Hymn to Zeus:

"No deed is done on earth, god, without your offices, nor in the divine ethereal vault of heaven, nor at sea, save what bad men do in their folly" (L&S, pg. 326).

- + Key. The key to understanding Stoicism is "the concept of the part-Whole relationship of the cosmos and its members."

The Stoic theory of knowledge is concerned with learning about the Whole through study of the parts, and of experience of the Whole by virtue of being one of the parts. The physics are based on this epistemology and stress the underlying unity of the parts as constantly-changing members of the Whole. Stoic ethics are concerned with the intelligent part (the human) achieving harmony with the Whole, particularly through the alignment of the perspective of the part with that of the Whole" (Roots).
